Police said one of the twin babies found Friday in an Olathe apartment with their mother's body has died.

Authorities were called to a third-floor apartment at 404 W. Poplar St. at about 12:45 p.m. Police said a 36-year-old woman was found dead on the floor. She may have been there for several days, possibly as long as a week, officials said.

KMBC reported that a neighbor called authorities because the woman had not been seen for several days and there was a strong odor emanating from the apartment. Police said the babies -- a boy and a girl -- are 24 days old and were dehydrated and malnourished. They were taken to a hospital in critical condition; the baby girl later died.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the woman's cause of death. Olathe Police Sgt. Jack Fahrnow would not say whether there were signs of foul play.

Friends told KMBC that the mother is from Kenya and the children's father still lives there.
